Our 72.5kV SF6 Circuit Breakers Successfully Deployed in Zambia Regional Grid Upgrade Project
Recently, we are pleased to share our latest overseas success story: a batch of high-performance 72.5kV sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) circuit breakers has been fully delivered and successfully put into operation for a regional grid upgrade and expansion project in Zambia. This completed project serves as solid field validation of the reliability, quality and outdoor environmental adaptability of our medium & high voltage switchgear under Africa’s challenging operating conditions, further strengthening our global track record in high-voltage power equipment supply.
Zambia’s local power infrastructure has faced long-standing challenges. Many sections of the existing grid were built years ago with limited load capacity, accompanied by unstable voltage and aging equipment. As local industry expands and urban residential power demand keeps rising, the outdated power network cannot meet the growing electricity consumption requirements. This regional grid quality improvement project targets core supply zones in Zambia. Its main objectives include optimizing backbone transmission lines, boosting transmission capacity of local substations, stabilizing power supply quality, and renewing supporting power infrastructure. The upgraded grid will reliably support heavy industrial power consumption, urban household electricity, and the ongoing construction of local public utility facilities. Given the harsh field conditions and safety requirements of this renovation project, the client set strict acceptance standards for high-voltage equipment: stable long-term operation, strong resistance to environmental erosion, excellent safety performance and low maintenance workload.

Southern Africa features typical tough outdoor climate: high ambient temperature all year round, heavy airborne dust, and large temperature swings between day and night. Such conditions place heavy pressure on the insulation and mechanical performance of outdoor high-voltage devices. To match these local working conditions, our R&D and engineering team optimized the 72.5kV SF6 circuit breakers specifically for this project in terms of environmental adaptability, external insulation design and arc-extinguishing performance. Adopting mature, proven sulfur hexafluoride gas insulation and arc quenching technology, this series of circuit breakers delivers outstanding short-circuit breaking capacity, consistent insulation performance and superior weather resistance. The equipment is engineered to maintain stable operation in harsh outdoor environments, with low failure rate during long service life and simplified routine maintenance. When grid faults such as overload and short-circuit occur, the breaker can rapidly cut off the faulty circuit to isolate risks, effectively protecting the whole transmission network and greatly improving the safety margin of the power grid.
The 72.5kV SF6 outdoor circuit breaker is a core primary equipment widely used for regional power grid expansion, new substation construction, substation retrofitting and heavy-industry power distribution hub upgrading. It covers a wide range of medium and high voltage transmission & distribution scenarios, with high operational safety and strong environmental tolerance. It has become a preferred high-voltage solution for overseas power infrastructure and grid modernization projects.
The successful commissioning of this Zambia project expands our portfolio of real-site reference cases across Africa. It helps build stronger brand recognition and competitiveness for our medium and high voltage electrical products in the African power market. We will keep focusing on developing highly adaptable, durable and cost-effective high-voltage power equipment. We will continue to deepen our footprint in global overseas markets, delivering reliable “Made in China” power solutions for grid renovation, substation construction and power infrastructure projects worldwide.
