A vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is a medium-voltage switching device that uses vacuum as the arc extinction medium instead of oil or SF6 gas. When contacts separate under fault conditions, the arc generated inside the vacuum interrupter extinguishes rapidly—typically within half a cycle—because there is no ionizable medium to sustain it.
